Switch from English to German

Over the last weeks I regularly checked my blog statistics. With today over 80% of my visitors’ browsers language is German. For a long time I’m wrangling with myself, if I should continue to post in English, to reach a broader audience, or should I switch to my mother tongue German. With the metrics in the background I’ll do following steps over the next few weeks.

  1. I’ll switch to German as the main language for  this blog, but you can still translate my blog with “Google Translate” in many different languages (ok, it’s only a weak substitute, but will give you an idea).
  2. I’ll translate some key blog entries into German, keep the “old” English ones online and try to avoid redundancy.
  3. I’ll link my posterous blog as a side-blog, where I’ll continue to write  in English (metrics say there is another language distribution) and post small idea chunks, for my English and multi-lingual friends.

I think this should be a “clean solution”, because a bi-lingual blog is to much effort for the current stage of my time budget.

According to Wikipedia there are 105 mn. German native speakers and approx. 80 mn. people who speak or understand German as a foreign language. The numbers for English are 340 mn. and 350 mn. up to 1 bn. people.
